About the 2nd Space Operations Squadron
The 2nd SOPS traces its lineage to the 2nd Surveillance Squadron, activated January 16, 1962, at Ent Air Force Base, Colorado, under Air Defense Command's 9th Aerospace Division. After serving as a critical link between sensor sites and higher headquarters, the squadron was inactivated on January 1, 1967. In May 1985, Air Force Space Command requested reactivation as the 2nd Satellite Control Squadron to command and control on-orbit GPS satellites. The squadron was officially activated on October 1, 1985, at Falcon Air Force Station, Colorado, as the first operating squadron of the 2nd Strategic Wing.
On January 30, 1992, during Air Force reorganization, the unit became the 2nd Space Operations Squadron and was reassigned to the 50th Operations Group. The GPS Operations Center (now GPS Warfighter Collaboration Cell) was established on June 18, 2004. In late 2005, several National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency monitor stations were integrated into the network to enhance navigation accuracy and signal monitoring. On July 24, 2020, as part of the U.S. Space Force's structural transformation, 2nd SOPS was assigned to Delta 8, continuing its vital mission in space-based navigation and global positioning.
